The new market is in turmoil

The information source is Prothom Alo "Exports of Bangladeshi-made garments to the United States and Canada have increased after the first push of the corona. The export situation in the European Union (EU) countries is also improving. Although these three big markets are doing relatively well, the export of unconventional or ready-made garments is faltering.

According to the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) and the garment industry owners' association BGMEA, garments worth 6 173.11 billion were exported to the new market in the four months (July-October) of the current fiscal year 2020-21.
This income is 10.8 percent less than the same period last year. Among the new markets, exports to Japan, Brazil, Chile, China, India and Mexico declined.
Not only exports to the new market have declined, the share of new markets in total garment exports has also declined. In the first four months of the current financial year, garments worth thousand 1.45 billion have been exported. 15 percent of them have gone to the new market. At the same time last year, the new market share in total garment exports was 16 percent.

Europe and the United States are being hit hard again by the second wave of corona infections. Corona infections are also on the rise in Brazil, Russia, India, Mexico, South Africa and Chile, which are known as new markets. As a result, the entrepreneurs of the garment industry think that there may be a new crisis in the export of garments in the coming days.

In the first four months of the current fiscal year, the United States exported Garment 1.9 billion worth of garments, despite a significant drop in exports to new markets. Exports to the market increased by 2.6 percent over the same period last year. From July to October, Canada exported crore 335.9 million worth of clothing, up 5.26 percent from the same period last year. On the other hand, garments worth 6.5 billion have been exported to the EU. This income is 22 percent less than the same period last year. However, in the fiscal year ended June, exports to the market fell by 16.6 percent. As such, the garment export situation in the EU has improved in the first four months of this year.

Due to the effect of Corona, the purchase order was canceled and the factory was closed. Only 520 million worth of goods were exported that month. The following month it increased to 123 million. In June, exports turned around a lot. Garments worth 224 million were exported that month. In the last financial year, the export of garments was 2,694 crore dollars, which is 16 percent less than the previous year.

Garments worth 480 million were exported to the new market last fiscal. At that time the export decreased by 15.95 percent. Among them, garment exports to Brazil fell by 33 per cent, China by 34 per cent, South Africa by 28 per cent, Mexico by 16 per cent and India by 15 per cent. Among the countries, garments worth ৬ 960 million were exported to Japan, crore 600 million to Australia, crore 440 million to Russia and crore 420 million to India. In the first four months of the current financial year, Japan has exported garments worth 300 million. This income is 15 percent less than the same period last year. From July to October last year, garments worth 360 million were exported to Japan. In the first four months of the current fiscal year, only crore 94.7 million worth of garments were exported to China. During the same period last year, exports amounted to 136 million. As a result, exports to China declined by 31.63 percent from July to October.

Garment exports to India have been on the rise for several years due to the convenience of exporting duty-free goods. But even there, exports have declined by 26 percent. The country exported only 150 million worth of garments from July to October. Exports during the same period last year were 210 million. Exports to Brazil fell 26.7 percent. In the first four months of the current financial year, the country has exported garments worth crore 28 million.

Mohammad Hatem, vice-president of BKMEA, an association of knitwear owners , told Prothom Alo : "Corona infection was lower in most of the new market countries than in the United States and Europe. The exceptions are Brazil, China and India. Even then, it is not clear to us why the garment exports in the new market as a whole could not turn around in the first four months of the current financial year. We have to look into the matter."
