COTTON FIBER
The word cotton comes from Arabic word "katan". It is called the king of fibers. Cotton is the backbone of world's textile market and it is also one of the most important and widely produced agricultural and industrial crops in the world. Cotton is grown in about 80 different countries in world-wide. The most important producers are the following: China, USA, India, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Turkey, Australia, Brazil, Greece, Argentina, Turkmenistan, and Syria. There are 35% lint cotton (spinable fibers) and 65% seeds in ripen collected cotton ball.
Faults and impurities of raw cotton
The following faults and impurities may present in commercial cotton fiber. Neps, Non-lint, Fibre strings, dust, trash, Coils, Motes and Crushed seeds are the major faults of raw cotton.
Trash Content
Still there are some impurities present in lint cotton after separation of seeds, which is named as trash content. Another way, trash content is the impurities of lint cotton mainly vegetable (broken seed/leaf /stem fragment), mineral (dust, sand, earth), foreign matter (metal, cloth) normally it varies from 0.08% to 8%.
